The coolest thing made in South Carolina has played a key role in the nation's defense for nearly half a century, but only made its debut in the Palmetto State a few months ago. The F-16 Fighting Falcon military jet, built at Lockheed Martin's campus in Greenville, took first place in second annual "Manufacturing Madness" contest sponsored by the S.C. Manufacturers Alliance. The war plane developed by General Dynamics saw its first flight in 1974 and it has seen service in several conflicts, including Operation Desert Storm and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
