Five fire departments in Berkeley County caught the attention of the Office of the State Fire Marshall because of their efforts in stopping a fire before it starts. The departments received the Fire Safe South Carolina Community designation. The program launched in 2017. Statewide there were 132 departments getting the nod. The five receiving the distinction in Berkeley County were Goose Creek Rural, C & B Fire Department, Pine Ridge Fire Department, Central Berkeley/Whitesville Fire Department and Hanahan Fire Department.
